Is your energy totally drained after a busy term? Read about 6 easy ways to incorporate energy boosters for teachers over your holiday break to recharge your batteries ready for the next school year or term.
We all have our own ideas on how to help ourselves RECHARGE over the school holiday break, and ENERGY BOOSTERS certainly don’t have to cost any money.
You might be an introvert like me and need time on your own to energize, or if you’re an extrovert, you probably crave the company of others to pump you up.
I find that I’m a little from both camps.
Many a time, on school holidays I was so depleted of energy I’d just have to vegetate on the lounge for much of the break. (This is not healthy, I know now, although, many introverts would relate to this so much – especially if you’re coping with any kind of chronic health issue (like me) and need the time to boost your energy deficit from a draining term).
But, instead of this, why not get a bit CREATIVE on your break, spark your interest and find some other ways to pump up that life-force, with new ideas!
In this post, I’m sharing six of my most favourite ways to relax and also the easiest energy boosters for teachers here.
I know you’ll love them too!
N.B. And don’t worry, if you’ve made some energy-draining mistakes through the term and find yourself completely drained, these ENERGY BOOSTER activities will help you a great deal.
Energy boosters for teachers
Energy booster idea #1 – Stop thinking about school
Here’s some tough love – Stop thinking about school on your break! This has got to be the number one thing you need to do when the term is finished as a way to boost your energy. Remeber you’re a person first and a teacher second, so you can leave school at school for a while.
But, if you’re a processor like me, give yourself the permission to reflect and plan out your new term…BUT after that, give yourself time to have a COMPLETE METAL BREAK from the drain of school preparation -. this is what’ll give you the GREATEST boost in your energy and SO important for your mental health. Your brain NEEDS to down-time too!
All the thinking and decision making with school is so emotionally depleting for teachers. But, by giving yourself PERMISSION to stop the thoughts about your students, your new class… or whatever you’ll be teaching, WILL make a huge difference in your energy levels.

Energy booster idea #2 – Decompress
It’s important to DECOMPRESS from the busy, stressful and sometimes frantic time that comes from teaching right up to the end a term or the last days of school.
To decompress, think of ways that your body is telling you it needs to rest and relax, to commence the process.
Everyone is DIFFERENT. There’s ‘no one-size fit all to wind down. However, the way I decompress is to firstly INTENTIONALLY stop thinking about school, then start to slow down. This entails finding some favourite programs on TV, or take a relaxing hot bath and listen to some quiet music.
Do this for yourself – Think about what will help you RELAX – it might be different to me. Windup affects people in a variety of ways, so do what works for YOU and be deliberate with your holiday activities to help.

Energy booster idea #3 – Go for picnic, bush-walk or see the sea
An easy energy booster is to get outside and go for a picnic, bushwalk or visit the seaside. Going OUT into nature is so refreshing, and the oxygen from clean air does wonders for the energy.
Getting the sun on your skin is also so important for energy too, to help top up your Vitamin D levels, which is a well-known source of energy at the cell level.
Whether it’s visiting the countryside, rainforest or beach; they’re all great settings for a picnic or bush walk with your friends or family members, to enjoy the outdoors and breathe deeply, as one of the easiest energy boosters for teachers to replenish.
Energy booster idea #4 – Take up a craft or hobby
Why not start your own favourite craft or hobby project? Changing tack can help you to wind down, but it’ll also renew your energy from creating something new.
I’m a long-time crafter from way back, but as a busy teacher I’ve had to let it slide. I know that naturally, I love to get my hands on beautiful fabric and make something pretty. I also really enjoy using a needle and thread to create a handcrafted stitchery.
But, if you’re not a crafter and don’t know where to start, begin with a relaxing jigsaw puzzle or even cooking for enjoyment; they’re are all lovely ways to recharge over the holidays.
Chilling with some easy creative activities can really help charge up your batteries.

Energy booster idea #5 – Read for enjoyment
I love reading a good book, especially on the holidays when it’s non-educational based.
Often though, as a teacher, do you find that you have to read so much professional development material at work, that you forget to just kick back and read for enjoyment or you’re just too damn tired?
I know I’m like that!
That’s why I LOVE the holidays. I can just choose from my large stack of books next to my bed, that I’m passionate to start, after my mind has had time to decompress in the holidays.
Why don’t you get going on your reading list too?
If you’re looking for some titles that are easy read novels, here are my suggestions: (and yes they’ve all been made into movies… but the books are definitely better!):
- The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
- The Martian by Andy Weir
- The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham
- Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
- Divergent by Veronica Roth
While novels are great, I have to admit that I’m a bit of a self-help junky and I get so much out of personal development – I love to LEARN about myself and improve ‘me’ where I can.
If you’re that way inclined too, check out my recommendations for awesome personal development books that have taught me so much:
- The Miracle Morning: The 6 Habits that will Transform your Life before 8 am by Hal Elrod
- The Art of Extreme Self-Care: 12 Practical & Inspiring Ways to Love Yourself More by Cheryl Richardson (refer to my post called: Teacher Self-Care: It’s Time for a Self-Care Inventory, which discusses tips from Cheryl’s book).
- The Resilience Project: Finding Happiness through Gratitude, Empathy & Mindfulness by Hugh Van Cuylengurg
- You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay
- Atomic Habits: An Easy and Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones by James Clear
- The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How to Make Your Life Better (and Other People’s Lives Better, Too) by Gretchen Rubin
Or, if you love crime novels like me, you can’t go wrong with a good old-fashioned Agatha Christie whodunit!
Energy booster idea #6 – Socialize
Who doesn’t enjoy a catch up with friends for a coffee?
But do you find in term time you’re too busy? Plus it can be a bit draining.
That’s why it’s important to prioritize time on the holidays for socializing and make an effort to reconnect with your friends.
I find entertaining can be a huge energy booster; just from sitting around, having some good food and a laugh gives such a boost to my emotional wellbeing too.
Make some time on your break to get a coffee with a mate. This act will support your wellbeing and the energy boost will do wonders – lifting your mood, and feed your soul too.
Energy booster idea #7 – Have a Netflix binge
Netflix binging is actually one of my favourite activities to do in the holidays.
It’s ok to give yourself permission to really wind down and boost your energy with some mindless TV binging.
Don’t get the guilts.
Just listen to what your body is telling you it needs, and if you must spend a day or two on the lounge watching your favourite reruns of The Blacklist or House, that’s ok.
I know I need it after a crazy school year too!
Note: Remind yourself that it’s ok to catch up on your favourite shows, especially if time doesn’t permit in your busy term – YOU DESERVE IT!
In closing – Energy boosters for teachers
I hope you can have fun with this list of energy boosters for teachers, plus add some of your own favourites to really help you relax, rest and replenish on your holidays, to help prepare you for the busyness of the next school year or term that will come.
